Madhya Pradesh Digitizes Historical Stepwells for Climate Heritage Mapping

The Madhya Pradesh Water Resources Department, with support from conservationists, has begun digital documentation of over 1,000 historical stepwells across districts like Ujjain, Chhatarpur, and Raisen. Using drones, LiDAR scans, and historical texts, the project records structural layouts, water-holding capacity, and design features. Many of these baolis, dating back to the Gupta and Mughal periods, are being mapped for integration into city-level water resilience planning. Citizens can access this data on a public web portal and explore virtual stepwell tours. Experts believe these structures can be revived as micro-harvesting systems in water-stressed towns.
